Sports law gets Onside

Sports boutique Onside Law has been launched by former lawyers from Clifford Chance and sports marketing group IMG. It has already landed Malaysia Airlines as a new client.

As first revealed on www.thelawyer.com (31 March), the firm, which will focus on sport, fashion and entertainment, has been launched by ex-IMG in-house lawyers Oliver Hunt and Jamie Singer and ex-Clifford Chance senior associate Simon Thorp.

Onside Law will act as Malaysia Airlines’ de facto in-house legal function and is currently advising on sponsorship issues.

Thorp said there was a growing demand for firms that were able to provide a quasi in-house legal function.

The firm has also won instructions to advise golfer Nick Faldo and the French Tennis Federation. It is advising Faldo on a range of matters arising from his management company, including those relating to branding and golf course design.

“We’ve got a unique blend of magic circle and industry experience,” claimed Thorp. There’s an industry reaction to the cost and quality of service from bigger firms.”
