Ailing dotcom company Sportal has lost its head of legal Jonathan West to new media start-up consultancy Catalyst Media Management.
Sportal, a sports website, has been fighting for second-round financing since early May, when its directors were forced to save it from administration with their own money. West left on an amicable basis. The site, he said, could not afford to keep him any longer. He had no paper shares in the business. West said: "The reality at Sportal was that, in the new phase it entered, it was probably not in the position to keep a City lawyer within its pay structure. "Through a mixture of friendship and loyalty I have continued to advise Sportal on its search for funding." Catalyst Media Management was set up in January 2001 by managing directors Marcus Watson and David Wardlaw. West has been given a non-legal role by the consultancy as its joint managing director. Sportal is expected to announce the results of its continuing quest for funding later on this month.
