At most such conferences, competition between law firms is at its most fierce when it comes to party time, and the IBA was certainly no different. On the Tuesday night, for example, a whole host of leading firms went head-to-head - Allen & Overy (A&O), Norton Rose, D&P (DLA & Partners), SJ Berwin and CMS Cameron McKenna - leaving Mr and Mrs Tulkinghorn a difficult choice. Most firms opted for venues near to Cancun's Moon Palace resort where the conference was based. A&O and D&P held receptions in the Ritz Carlton, A&O downstairs in a large suite with a buffet and D&P opting for the intimate approach, with guests offered a never-ending selection of Mexican-style canapés, while the sophisticated ambience was created by a tape recorder in the corner playing classical piano music. Meanwhile, SJ Berwin - a firm well known for its love of parties (remember David Harrel getting a snog from a giant fish at the last firm bash?) - chose an exclusive location a little further afield at the local tourist attraction Tres Rios. Unfortunately, the transport organised to take guests to the party fell through and a lot of disappointed delegates were forced to abandon their plans and head off to a competitor's party. However, rumour has it that those that battled their own way there were in for a treat. The food, Tulkinghorn was very pleased to hear, was superb.
