Split attorney general’s functions, say MPs

The political and legal roles performed by the attorney general should be split, according to a committee of MPs. The justice committee said the Government’s current reform proposals did not go far enough in restoring public confidence in the wake of controversies such as the Serious Fraud Office’s probe into the BAE Systems and Saudi Arabia arms deal. “The draft bill fails to achieve the purpose given to constitutional reform by the Prime Minister,” the committee’s report said. The bill, the committee argues, actually gives greater power to the Government while failing to add to transparency.
