As a sole practitioner I pick up many clients who have got fed up with being passed from one fee-earner to another at large firms, none of whom has any sort of overview of the client’s business. The question is, is there a strong enough market? Then, of course, in order to enter the market you need to have so much knowledge to win your customers over. I’ve worked on many transactions where lazy and disinterested corporate lawyers delegate to specialists but don’t make an effort to understand the issues themselves and let the deal drift with lawyers focusing on immaterial issues while nobody ‘grips it’ in a focused and strategic way. The bigger the law firm the more likely this is to happen. With the internet allowing such amazing opportunities to be connected to people and information, in a digital age what a client needs is a ‘wired’ and web savvy lawyer who can effectively project manage deals. Its not what you know yourself that matters, but the fact that you know how to access information and apply good judgment and communication skills that makes a difference.
