Heavyweight media silk Richard Spearman QC is to join Desmond Browne QC in The Mirror's legal line-up for the Naomi Campbell appeal
The Mirror was ordered to pay Campbell £3,500 damages for invasion of privacy in March this year. Browne, of 5 Raymond Buildings, led the original legal team for The Mirror singlehandedly. According to a spokesperson for Spearman's chambers, 4-5 Gray's Inn Square, The Mirror had considered playing Spearman alongside Browne in the original case.
Now that he is on the Campbell appeal, Spearman will have been involved in every celebrity privacy case of 2002. In January, he successfully acted for the Sunday People to stop TV presenter Jamie Theakston obtaining an injunction to prevent publication of the details of his escapades in a brothel. In March, he won for the Sunday People again, this time enabling the newspaper to identify Blackburn Rovers FC footballer Garry Flitcroft as having had extramarital affairs. Then, in May, Spearman won TV presenter Angus Deayton an injunction to keep further revelations about his sex life out of The Mail on Sunday.
