A senior lawyer at the Spanish competition authority is expected to be appointed to the European Commission’s directorate general for competition today.
Nadia Calviño Santamaría, will become the deputy director general with special responsibility for mergers. She will report to director general Philip Lowe, who is also currently the acting deputy director general for mergers. She is currently the deputy general director of mergers at the Spanish competition authority.
One Spanish competition partner said: “This is a very powerful post and the first time it has been appointed to someone from Spain. Nadia is a very good lawyer and has been determined to modernise Spanish competition law.”
In her new role Calviño Santamaría will be responsible for making recommendations on mergers to the European Commission. Last week Court of First Instance overturned the Commission's decision to clear the merger between Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) and Sony Music.
