Leading Spanish independent firm Uría Menéndez has made a rare lateral hire to boost its environmental law practice, bringing in a new partner to its Barcelona office.
The firm, a Slaughter and May best friend, has hired partner Juan Antonio Loste from Schiller Abogados, along with a team of three associates. Loste is one of the main figures in environmental law in Spain and his practice focuses advice to companies and public authorities on environmental matters.
The hires take the Barcelona office of Uría Menéndez over the 100-lawyer mark. Uría Menéndez decided to bolster its environmental group there after seeing increasing demand from companies for advice on the environment and renewable energies in Cataluña.
The firm has entered into a rare hiring spree over the last few weeks. In February the firm merged with Lisbon employment boutique Fraœsto da Silva & Associados. In all, Uría took six lawyers, including founding partner Filipe Fraœsto da Silva, to boost its Lisbon employment law and commercial litigation practices.
