The chairman of Silicon Valley firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati has been elected as a director of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
Larry Sonsini, one of the top corporate lawyers in the Valley, was elected along with four other new directors and has been brought in to represent the public on the board. The board includes 12 representatives of the public, 12 of the securities industry and two NYSE officers. The two other new members representing the public are the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Vivendi Universal Jean-Marie Messier, and president and CEO of JP Morgan Chase William Harrison. Sonsini was unavailable for comment, but sources close to him say that he is keen to be the voice of the technology sector on the board. His firm is one of the Valley's most high-profile securities firms and has led the way in taking companies public over the last few years, although most have joined the competing Nasdaq exchange.
