This year, The Lawyer’s annual ranking of the largest UK law firms by turnover is available as an interactive, digital benchmarking tool. For the first time this will allow you to manipulate each data set against the metrics of your choice.
Slaughter and May has elected litigator Richard Clark and employment lawyer Jonathan Fenn to the firm’s partnership council.
The 10-strong management board, which meets monthly, focuses mainly on practice strategy. It also has the power to make decisions in key areas, such as partner remuneration and technology investments. Other major decisions, including partner promotions, are made by the full partnership.
The magic circle firm uses a combination of weighted constituencies to make up the board. Four of the firm’s practice stream heads are voted in every three years. Currently, head of corporate Nigel Boardman, head of M&A Stephen Cooke, head of tax Steve Edge and head of banking Richard Slater are on the board. These places are up for review next year.
Four more partners are elected on a two-yearly by constituencies within the firm. Fenn, who replaces outgoing partner Graham White, was elected by the property, pensions and employment groups.
Clark, who replaces head of competition Malcolm Nicholson, was elected by litigators, competition lawyers, the technology, media and telecoms group and the four-partner Paris office. It is understood that both men were clear front-runners for the positions.
The two other elected positions on the board, which were filled last year by Elizabeth Holden and Martin Hattrell, go automatically to corporate partners. Constituency boundaries provide that a younger partner – in this case Holden – be elected to represent the junior end of the partnership. The final two places on the board are held by senior partner Tim Clark and executive partner Melvyn Hughes.
