Think things are all nice and rosy between Slaughter and May and Clifford Chance? No? Well, neither did Tulkinghorn. But it was still amusing to hear Slaughters partner David Frank wind up CC in the stately surrounds of the Savoy Hotel last week.
Frank was making an acceptance speech on behalf of Slaughters and its best friends network (Bredin Prat, France; Hengeler Mueller, Germany; Bonelli Erede Pappalardo, Italy; and Uría Ménendez, Spain) after collecting the Exceptional Achievement Award at the Managing Partners' Forum Awards, and had a less than subtle dig. "With all due respect to the table in front of me," he said, indicating CC, "you were wrong… There is another way, and clearly a lot of people agree with us."
The stiff backs and stony faces at the CC table were as amusing as the delighted murmurs and whispers at every other table in the room.
Sadly, Bredin Prat partner Didier Martin missed the dig - he was stuck at the airport in Paris due to an air traffic controller strike. Sacré bleu!
