No real break from tradition for Slaughter and May, with the only lateral hire in 2006-07 being Hong Kong-based Lisa Chung, who rejoined the firm in the corporate department as a partner after a year-long spell away in-house at Morgan Stanley.
Instead the firm concentrates on home-grown lawyers and 2006-07 was a bumper year. Slaughters made up eight to the partnership, continuing the steady rise in the number of promotions evidenced over the past four years. Moreover, the firm expanded its focus from its corporate core, which benefited from three promotions, to a range of other sector groups. Associates at the firm benefit from a shorter partnership track than at other UK top 10 firms, typically being promoted at six or seven years’ PQE.
Slaughters is more diverse than its old-school stereotype might have one believe. More than 15 per cent of the partnership is now female and more than 70 per cent of total fee-earners. Ethnic minorities, however, are less well represented, making up around 6 per cent of the partnership.
