SJ Berwin’s international growth continues with Shanghai launch

The move comes after the firm earlier this year moved away from its traditional European roots, launching in Hong Kong in March (23 March 2009) and Dubai in April (6 April 2009).

The Shanghai office will focus on fund formation, M&A, private equity and real estate. The office launches with two senior associates, Phillipp Senff and Hailong Ji, who have relocated from Frankfurt.

SJ Berwin senior partner Jonathan Blake said: “This is a further step in our strategy of international development in our core areas, and reinforces our confidence in the expansion and growth of our firm worldwide.”

Although Shanghai does not yet have a partner presence it possible that SJ Berwin has relocated a number of partners to its Hong Kong and Dubai offices.

Dubai launched with London-based litigation partner Tim Taylor and Paris-based corporate partner Benjamin Aller relocated to the Middle Eastern jurisdiction.

For its Hong Kong launch SJ Berwin hired Dewey & LeBoeuf Hong Kong head Daniel Liew. He has become SJ Berwin’s Asia managing partner, working alongside commercial partner Peter Tse and real estate partners Hans Thomas Kessler and Giovanna Kwong, who joined from Dewey last year.
