SJ Berwin has followed its City rivals by announcing the promotion of 16 associates to its partnership - its largest number to date.
The appointments number three more than last year, when 13 lawyers were made up, and continue the firm's increasing focus on organic growth. In 2004-05 seven were promoted, while 11 were made up in 2005-06.
SJ Berwin has promoted 47 lawyers to its partnership in the past four years, with a consistent focus on the corporate practice, which has received 17 promotions since 2004-05.
Of the latest promotions, which are effective from 1 May, seven are in corporate, three are in tax, two are in real estate and one apiece go to finance, litigation, financial services and corporate and technology.
The results are disappointing for the finance team, which received just one promotion this year after failing to receive any appointments last year.
London continues to receive the lion's share of promotions, this time securing nine. Madrid and Munich fared best out of the Continental Europe offices, with two promotions apiece. Paris, Frankfurt and Berlin also received one promotion each.
By comparison, there have only been two lateral hires into the London corporate team in the past three years compared with three in the Continental Europe offices. The loss of a heavyweight private equity funds team to Kirkland & Ellis's London office in January this year is likely to create further opportunities for associates within that team.
