Dickerson is best known as the former managing partner of Lyon & Lyon, the Los Angeles IP and patent litigation boutique which collapsed in August 2002.
Dickerson was a member of Lyon & Lyon’s five-partner management board and was at the firm when it had merger talks with both Jones Day and Orrick. In February 2002, Dickerson was one of several Lyon & Lyon lawyers who joined Jones Day.
Dickerson has joined Orrick as a partner at a time when his new firm is rapidly expanding in IP. His move follows the recent hires of Joseph Calvaruso, formerly head of Chadbourne & Parke’s IP group and Mark Wine, former co-chair of McDermott Will & Emery's Los Angeles IP, media and technology department.
In the past five months, eight IP lawyers have joined Orrick’s Los Angeles and Orange County offices.
Gary Weiss, Orrick’s managing partner for North America and chair of the IP group, said, “We continue to focus on adding leading, first-chair litigators who have a track record of success in the courtroom and with clients. Rob is just that kind of lawyer.”
Dickerson’s arrival will add not only significant experience but also a degree of colour to the team. According to his former Jones Day profile, Dickerson worked as a cowboy on a cattle ranch prior to pursuing his legal career and paid his way through college by playing lead guitar in a rock band.
