Simmons & Simmons is aiming to swoop on the bottleneck of senior associates striving for partnership in magic circle firms as part of a growth strategy for its corporate department.
The firm has just raided Allen & Overy for senior associate Gavin Weir, who joined Simmons on 20 March. He specialises in corporate fin-ance, M&A, capital markets and corporate governance.
Simmons head of international corporate Damon Le Maitre-George told The Lawyer that he hoped to increase his department by 50 per cent over the next three years.
He said Weir was the first of a number of senior associate hires the firm plans to make in the coming months.
"There are a number of very talented senior associates at big City firms at the moment," he said. "There's definitely a bottleneck of excellent lawyers at associate level and it's something we've been benefiting from.
"We're growing our corporate team significantly. I'm hoping we can increase the team by at least 50 per cent, if not more, during the next three years."
