Simmons & Simmons has scored a deal with blue-chip Spanish client Acciona Energia one month into the firm enlarging its Spanish operation.
This is the first deal Simmons has advised Acciona on outside the UK, with the instruction coming via a recommendation from the London office.
Acciona acquired solar power plant Amper Central Solar from the municipal authorities in Moura, south Portugal. Acciona will now invest €250m (£169.46m) in the plant’s construction, which will make it the biggest solar power plant in the world with 350,000 solar panels over 114 hectares.
Simmons’ managing partner in Portugal William Smithson led the deal alongside finance partner Alexandra Maia de Loureiro. The Moura authorities handled the deal internally.
In March Simmons announced that it had merged with Spanish firm Mochales & Palacios (The Lawyer, 5 March), meeting the target set out by managing partner Mark Dawkins to double the firm’s presence in Spain in 2007.
Although the instruction predated the merger, Smithson said: “The merger obviously gives us more dimension in Iberia and a bigger profile. Hopefully we’ll be considered for larger transactions by clients such as Acciona.”
