Sidley Austin has redoubled its efforts to push into the London insurance market by bringing over two senior lawyers from its US practice following the hire of a DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary team for its insurance launch.
James Stinson, co-chair of the firm's insurance and financial services group, joined the London office in May to kick off the London practice. He will be joined in the UK later this summer by Chicago of counsel Kenneth Wile.
As first reported by The Lawyer (20 February), Sidley recruited DLA Piper's former head of insurance restructuring and insolvency Nigel Montgomery and a team of three associates for the launch.
Stinson said: "I'm over here to help Nigel get the insurance practice launched. We're in the process of building up the group."
Stinson is hoping to enlarge the team over the next few months and is particularly interested in lawyers working in reinsurance and corporate matters relating to the insurance sector.
Sidley traditionally adopts a conservative attitude towards expansion, but wants to build a successful London insurance capability off the back of its US group.
Sidley's US insurance practice has around 60 lawyers based in Chicago and New York. Clients include AIG, CNA and investment banks including JPMorgan, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley.
