Showdown over Bread Street votes

THE SUCCESSFUL candidate in last November's alderman elections for the City ward of Bread Street will this week appeal against the Court of Aldermen's refusal to ratify his election.

Malcolm Matson, who won the election by 54 votes to 15, is arguing against Mr Justice Latham's refusal to quash the decision.

Nominated for alderman by a partner at City firm Allen & Overy, Matson says the decision not to ratify his appointment was "irrational" and made without giving reasons.

He won following a vote of individuals in the ward - including Allen & Overy partners - who own property above a certain rateable value.

Matson, represented by Clifford Chance, Lord Lester QC and Antony White, claims the Court of Alderman is also in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.
