DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it? Well, not to worry - from 1 September the name will be shortened to just DLA Piper. And about time too.
The merger that created DLA Piper took place on 1 January 2005 and since then the rest of us have had to struggle with this marathon of a name. Not that DLA Piper is the only firm. Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom? Is it just us who always forget Slate? And Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton…? US firms are good at long names, but the Portuguese are the real winners. The undisputed heavyweight champion has to be F Castelo Branco & Associados Veiga Gomes Marques Da Cruz Colmonero Sociedades de Advogados.
