One prominent lawyer, and no stranger to Tulkinghorn's colourful page, was utterly dismayed by Chelsea's woeful FA Cup defeat by Barnsley last week. But through his tears, said lawyer was able to complete a bit of detective work that piqued Tulkinghorn's interest.
"As I watched my team being slaughtered yesterday, I couldn't help wondering who Wake Smith were. A local firm of Barnsley solicitors, and shirt sponsors, who seem to have got some fabulous national coverage from this cup run. I bet they think that's a good investment."
Tulkinghorn thinks that, yes, it is looking a better investment than the hundreds of millions of pounds Chelsea has spent putting together a team of FA Cup quarter-finalists.
Wake Smith company commercial partner John Baddley, who struck the deal, said: "If there was a season to sponsor Barnsley then this was it. Fortune smiles on the brave in making decisions to sponsor football clubs - a rare thing in the legal world."
