German insurer Allianz called in its preferred legal adviser Shearman & Sterling, led by German managing partner Georg Thoma, to advise on the €10.2bn (£6.8bn) purchase of shares in Assurances Générales de France (AGF). Thoma is the relationship partner for Allianz, along with corporate partner Hans Diekmann, and advised on the insurer's £3.85bn takeover of Italian insurance group Riunione Adriatica di Sicurtà in 2005. The acquisition gives Allianz the remaining 42.2 per cent of shares in AGF that it did not already own. It also marks Allianz's biggest acquisition since it took over Dresdner Bank in 2001 for €14.8bn (£9.8bn), another deal on which Thoma advised. AGF looked to Darrois Villey Maillot Brochier for its legal advice, with name partner Jean-Michel Darrois leading the team. Meanwhile, Darrois's Parisian rival Bredin Prat also fielded its name partner, Jean-François Prat, for Allianz, advising on the French aspects of the deal.
