French corporate finance specialist firm Serra Leavy & Cazals has trumped regular Vivendi Universal M&A counsel Bredin Prat on what is expected to be the biggest M&A deal in France this year
Serra is representing Vivendi on the sale of its publishing business, which analysts expect to raise around E3bn (£1.9bn) for the company, as it continues efforts to ease its debt. The mandate is a coup for Serra Leavy. Slaughter and May's best friend Bredin Prat has advised Vivendi on a number of M&A deals recently, including the sale of its stake in internet portal Vizzavi. Serra gained the business through personal contacts the firm has with board members at Vivendi. Name partner Claude Serra is leading the deal. Bredin Prat is representing one of the consortia bidding for the publishing business. There are thought to be five consortia bidding. One team comprises US investor funds Thomas H Lee, Blackstone Partners and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, UK fund Apax Partners and the private equity unit of BNP Paribas. Another comprises US fund the Carlyle Group and French investment group Eurazeo.
