We all know that lawyers make squillions, but even Tulkinghorn was surprised to learn that Mishcon de Reya partner Jeremy Hertzog had squirreled enough away to pick up his own football team. Hertzog, a litigator, has famously embarked on an ambitious spending spree since picking up Chelsea for £140m. So far he has spent £111m on new players and managed to persuade former Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon to jump ship to the Blues. Hertzog made partner at Mishcons in April this year, a point that curiously preceded the purchase of Chelsea by a mysterious Russian going by the clearly made-up name ‘Roman Abramovich’ by only a few weeks. Just time for the first profit share to come rolling in.
