As our analysis this week shows, there are very few who still hold up the secret soundings system as an example of the way a modern society should appoint its highest legal figures. The Bar Council admits that the system needs to change preferring an advisory committee made up of judges and senior lawyers. Pressure is mounting on the LCD to make changes and now is the time that the profession needs to be most involved in the debate.
It was good to see Bob Sayer speaking on mainstream news bulletins, but such personal advocacy can be undermined by the Law Society's decision to take its bat home as far as the current system goes. Without the solicitors' own body continuing to participate in the flawed process and arguing the case for a modern democratic system from within, it is left as a voice crying in the wilderness.
