Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw securitisation star Mark Nicolaides has shocked the market by leaving the firm after more than 20 years.
It is understood that the lawyer is yet to sign up with another firm but is in the advanced stage of negotiations about his next position.
The reasons for his departure are unclear but sources believe that Nicolaides left to seek a bigger platform for his practice.
Nicolaides has been based in Europe since the 1980s and has led the firm’s charge on securitisation in the region.
His deals include the much lauded North Sea Funding landmark deal for ABN Amro, which combined asset-backed commercial paper and collateralised debt obligation technology.
At Mayer Brown the partner was also part of the firm’s Israel Group focusing on Israeli businesses and those looking to invest in the region. he also acts as outside counsel to the European Securitisation Forum.
Mayer Brown and Nicolaides were unavailable for comment.
