A Law Lord v Lord Irvine and bar stalwarts. Lord Steyn is calling on the Lord Chancellor to reform the judicial selection process by setting up a judicial appointments commission. Lord Steyn says judges occupy a more political role since they must interpret the Human Rights Act as of next October and therefore their appointment must be more open and accountable. His support for reform adds to the mounting pressure on Lord Irvine to abandon the "secret soundings" system of appointing judges.
