Cardiff solicitor and sole practitioner Jonathan Brierley, who has now been convicted of sexual assault against a dinner guest, attempted to persuade the court that the fact he is a solicitor would prejudice the jury because they would think he knew what to say when arrested and in court. An agreement between defence counsel Peter Rouch QC and prosecutor James Jenkins not to reveal Brierley’s occupation has infuriated the press, who claim he simply wanted to keep his name out of the papers. Swansea news agency Dragon named Brierley’s occupation and lambasted him for wasting public money by arguing the point in court.
