Lord Irvine is provoking human rights organisation Justice by insisting on sitting as a judge in the House of Lords in an employment law tribunal appeal. Lord Irvine is steadfastly ignoring calls to step down from the case. Critics claim every House of Lords case has some political relevance and say Lord Irvine faces a conflict of interest between his roles of senior judge and cabinet minister. Last month Justice issued a report saying the Lord Chancellor should not sit as a judge and should stop being the head of the judiciary.
