Scran maketh the man

Amid the money, suits and skyscrapers of the London legal world, it’s heartening to meet a man still in touch with his humble roots. And Nigel Savage, chief executive of the College of Law, is that man.

When it comes to a working lunch, there will be no dim sum, sushi or blackened miso cod at the Savage dining table. Instead, and in humble recognition of his working-class heritage, lunch for Savage consists of a sarnie and a hard-boiled egg from a miner’s snap tin.

“Snap is South Yorkshire slang for your sandwiches,” Savages explains, probably wishing he’d said butties.

“This tin is an heirloom from my uncle who worked down pit and survived the 1953 Cresswell pit disaster,” says Savage.

Ee bah gum, he may not have inherited the profession, but at least he inherited the diet.
