ILLEGAL Internet material and online contracts are due to be discussed at the third annual conference of the Society for Computers & Law (SCL) this week, "IT Law Beyond the Millennium".
The conference, which will take place this Friday at the former National Liberal Club at 1 Whitehall Place, London, will be chaired by Richard Christou, director of commercial and legal affairs at computer giant ICL.
A key speaker will be Richard Schlechter, adviser to the General Director at the European Commission, who will discuss the draft European Union (EU) directive on electronic signatures. Other speakers include Bird & Bird partner Hilary Pearson and Lars Davies, a research fellow at London's Centre for Commercial Law Studies. Both will tackle the issue of national jurisdiction rules in cyberspace.
Dr Mada Bryde Andersen, professor of law at the University of Copenhagen will examine the proposed EU directive on Internet liability.
Law firms have until 13 November to submit entries for the annual SCL award for the most outstanding application of information technology to the law in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Both firms and individuals are eligible to apply. The award will be presented at a ceremony on 25 January.
