2004 saw Clifford Chance secure one of the most coveted roles in German private equity – that of lead adviser to 3i. And young Frankfurt partner
Mario Schmidt was instrumental to the win.
It was Schmidt’s work on the e50m (£34.6m) buyout of German pharmaceutical company Lichtwer Pharma that first impressed 3i, which then sent a repeat instruction Schmidt’s way in the form of the acquisition of sewage pumps manufacturer Jung Pumpen.
In scooping the role, Clifford Chance edged aside 3i’s previous advisers CMS Hasche Sigle and also beat former Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer private equity star Peter Nussbaum to the role.
