Schillings adapts to defamation cost-capping

Media boutique Schillings is shifting its target client focus in anticipation of the introduction of cost-capping on defamation cases.

Media boutique Schillings is shifting its target client focus in anticipation of the introduction of cost-capping on defamation cases.

Three separate government reviews to analyse the cost of defamation cases are currently ongoing. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is in the process of reviewing the cost of libel cases while Lord Justice Jackson is reviewing civil litigation costs. The Ministry of Justice is also assessing the costs of these cases.

In anticipation of defamation costs being capped as a result of these reviews, the firm is now looking to target a larger number of small cases
as opposed to a limited number of larger litigations.

“It seems likely that there’s going to be mandatory consideration of costs,” explained Schillings chief executive Rod Christie-Miller. “This does have an effect on how we run our business.”
