Salans expands Turkish operation

Salans has boosted its presence in Turkey by swallowing up two smaller local legal outfits.

Salans has boosted its presence in Turkey by swallowing up two smaller local legal outfits.

The firm’s associate office in Istanbul, Özel & Özel, has merged with Gökk?l?ç Law Office and Keki & Gürel. The move will add three Turkish partners to the Istanbul office, which now numbers five partners and 23 lawyers in total.

The new partners, Dr Selim Keki, Göksan Gürel and Ekin Gökk?l?ç Güncan will build their practices around the automotive, energy, telecommunications and real estate industries in Turkey.

Haluk Can Özel, managing partner of the firm’s Turkish arm, said: “Salans decided in March last year to enhance its capacity in Turkey but completion of the project took some time.”

He added: “We have almost doubled the Istanbul presence and we can now help Salans’ clients in developed markets move into Turkey, which was one of the fastest growing markets in Europe last year.”

Salans has also promoted senior associate Orkun Güncan to partner in the Istanbul office, where he has worked since 1997. Increasing levels of corporate activity in Turkey are attracting the attention of law firms. Last year Norton Rose refocused its international strategy to include Turkey at the expense of Brazil.

Salans’ expansion in Istanbul caps off a busy few months of European growth for the firm. In November the firm raided Taylor Wessing for a five-lawyer real estate team to boost its Paris office.
