Sacked Clifford Chance assistant settles directory dispute

An assistant solicitor sacked by Clifford Chance after he sent a personal submission highlighting his achievements to the Chambers & Partners directory has settled his case.

Robert Carolina settled his action for unfair dismissal and breach of contract with Clifford Chance earlier this month.

Although both sides are refusing to reveal details of the claim and the settlement, it is understood that Carolina's dismissal from the firm last year was at least partly prompted by his decision to send a personal letter to Chambers alongside the firm's official submission to the directory.

A two-day hearing was held earlier this year but Carolina withdrew his action this month before the tribunal had reached its decision.

Carolina, who is now an intellectual property specialist at London firm Tarlo Lyons, refused to comment on the case.

A spokesman for Clifford Chance said: “Robert Carolina was dismissed for misconduct and we stand by the decision.”
