No5 barrister S Chelvan, along with other members of the bar from Matrix Chambers, Hardwicke Chambers, 5 Paper Buildings and 3 Hare Court, will be speaking at  the FreeBar Launch Event on Wednesday 17th February 2016. FreeBar is an new initiative aimed to LGBT+ barristers at the Bar, and get heterosexual lawyers on board this forum.

FreeBar is working closely with Stonewall, an equal rights campaign group and they are focused on supporting LGBT+ Barristers in their careers.

There is an ingrained fear amidst LGBT+ lawyers that biases like homophobia and transphobia still exist across the profession and to combat this lawyers have been bombarded with pro-diversity initiatives over the past few years. This has now lead to the LGBT+ networks being a commonplace amongst top Solicitor firms and that law firms are leading the way on the diversity front.

Other speakers at this event include  Sir Paul Jenkins QC (Hon), Matrix Chambers,  Caroline Harrison QC, barrister at 3 Temple Garden, Chantal-Aimée Doerries QC, Chair of the Bar Council, HHJ Dight, the Diversity and Community Relations judge and Natalie Hearn, Matrix Chambers.
