United Company Rusal, the biggest aluminium producer in the world, has hired BP’s former Russian general counsel to head up its legal team.
Kirill Alexandrov has joined Rusal as managing director for legal affairs from the Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK), where he was chief legal officer since 2005.
The hires come at a critical time for the Rusal legal team. Last June the company lost key capital markets lawyer Max Goldman ahead of its proposed listing on the London Stock Exchange. At the same time, Rusal’s M&A legal head Max Sukov moved to a business development position within the in-house team.
Alexandrov headed the legal group in BP’s Russian office for the two years before he joined SUEK. His career also includes a stint at oil company SIDANCO and before that he was Russian legal chief at Swiss raw materials provider Glencore for six year.
Alexandrov’s role will be to oversee corporate transactions, partnership projects and fund raising as well as to update Rusal’s corporate governance system.
Rusal accounts for 12 per cent of the global production of aluminium, and was founded in March last year through the three-way £15bn merger between Rusal, Sual and the aluminium business of Glencore.
