Insurance giant RSA has appointed Derek Walsh as group general counsel to succeed Mark Chambers.

Walsh joins the group from specialist insurer Argo Group, which he joined in December from Benfield Group where he was group general counsel.

In his position Walsh will be responsible for the insurer’s legal, group secretarial and group regulatory risk and compliance teams worldwide.

Group chief executive Andy Haste said: “Having spent the majority of his career working in the insurance sector, Derek brings with him a wealth of experience.”

In the UK alone the insurer has a legal spend of approximately £3.5m, and has a world wide legal team of 12.

In August last year the insurer appointed Pinsent Masons as its exclusive provider on employment and HR issues in the UK (The Lawyer, 9 August 2009).
