Ropes’ hopes

They’ve been to the well a few times and come back with nothing but wet hands, but now Ropes & Gray’s dynamic London duo are starting to build the private equity practice they’ve been craving since setting up shop last year.

Maurice Allen and Mike Goetz raised a few austere eyebrows by taking on the challenge of conjuring a City presence for Ropes out of thin air during these turbulent times.

And while the project is still in its honeymoon period, today’s hire of Jones Day M&A partner Peter Baldwin is a good step in the right direction (see story).

Baldwin’s arrival adds to a private equity offering that was bolstered last month with the arrival of DLA Piper’s Kiran Sharma. It also takes the office’s partner headcount into double figures for the first time.

It won’t do much to take the spotlight off Allen and Goetz, but at least it’ll give them a few more bods to talk to around the place.
