Ropes & Gray Shanghai bulks up with senior Hogan Lovells IP hire

Ropes & Gray has strengthened the IP capabilities of its newly opened Shanghai office with the hire of Geoffrey Lin, a former IP partner at Hogan Lovells.

Ropes & Gray has strengthened the IP capabilities of its newly opened Shanghai office with the hire of Geoffrey Lin, a former IP partner at Hogan Lovells.

Lin has more than six years experience advising clients in China and has handled IP matters for a range of companies including Genentech, Becton, Dickinson and Apple.

His previous practice spanned a wide spectrum of IP ranging from strategies, protection, licensing agreements and technology transaction to contentious IP issues.

According to Lin, joining Ropes marks an important shift to allow him to specialise in a particular area of transactional IP with an eye on higher-end opportunities arising from the firm’s corporate-focused practice.

“The main reason I left Hogan Lovells for Ropes & Gray is so I can focus on the strength of my IP practice, which lies in advising clients in the life sciences industry and technology transactions,” said Lin. “As the IP legal service market is getting bigger and much more competitive, firms need to be smarter, more focused on servicing targeted clients.”

Ropes launched its Shanghai office in July, three years after the opening of its first Greater China presence in Hong Kong. The new office is led by managing partner Arthur Mok, who joined the firm in 2010 from Hogan Lovells legacy firm Hogan & Hartson.

It focuses on private equity and investment funds along with M&A transactions, particularly in the life sciences industry. The office currently has around 10 fee earners including three partners.
