Ropes & Gray opens Shanghai base

Ropes & Gray has opened an office in Shanghai more than a year after the local managing partner of legacy firm Hogan & Hartson joined the firm.

Last May Arthur Mok, the managing partner of Hogan’s Shanghai office since it launched in 2004, joined Ropes as part of the Boston-headquartered firm’s expansion in China (5 May 2010).

Following the lengthy licence application process and regulatory box-ticking, the US firm is now able to launch its private equity-focused outpost, its third in Asia.

Mok said up until now the firm had serviced its clients such as Bain and TPG from Hong Kong.

“But a significant proportion of deals are on the mainland,” added Mok. “Having an office there definitely gives you an edge.”

The firm is launching with two partners and five associates.

Along with corporate partner Mok, investment funds partner Geoffrey Chan will form the basis of the new office.

Ropes opened offices in Hong Kong in 2008 and Tokyo in 2007.
