Rodrigo Uría, the president of Uría Menéndez, has died unexpectedly of a heart attack. Uría, aged 66, was on holiday in Croatia when he died. He began his career in 1973 when he became partner at his father’s firm. After taking over the reins at Uría Menéndez five years later, he converted it into one of the most successful business law firms in Spain. He was managing partner until 2005, when he stepped down to become president of the firm.
Uría was a prominent figure in Spanish society and was made chairman of the Royal Board of Trustees of the Prado Museum in Madrid in 2004. Antonio Garrigues, president of Garrigues, said: “Rodrigo Uría will always be one of the great Spanish lawyers and the firm he created will always be one of the great firms of the professional world.”
