Robert Shepherd is known for his very commercial approach, has strong connections with the London firms and often acts on multi-jurisdictional work. He joined Mourant Ozannes in 1999 following eight years with Clifford Chance in London and is the managing partner of the Guernsey office.
He works in the following practice areas: litigation, international trusts and private client, financial services and regulatory.
Shepherd has wide experience of corporate, commercial and banking disputes including regulatory investigations and prosecutions.
Together with Christopher Edwards, he is retained on one of the largest-value pieces of trust litigation ever dealt with in Guernsey, which has involved a number of applications to courts in England and South Africa as well as Guernsey.
Shepherd has a broad array of clients and legal experience but specialises in finance and fiduciary services, where he has been involved in some of the leading cases concerning fraud and disclosure orders and their impacts on local financial institutions, as well as acting on some of the leading trust cases.
In addition, he has strong commercial and employment expertise. He has also been involved in a growing number of mediations.
Shepherd qualified as a solicitor (England, currently non-practising) in 1993 and an advocate (Guernsey) in 2002.
According to Chambers UK, 2013, sources say Shepherd ‘has been around the block a few times and shows immensely good judgement’, while the Legal 500, 2012, states that he has ‘first-class judgement’.
Chambers Europe, 2012, says Shepherd is ‘knowledgeable and considered’ and ‘he provides appropriate and valuable advice’.
He has ‘excellent technical and practical knowledge… but he is also sharp and tenacious’, according to the Citywealth Leading Lawyers List, 2012.
Shepherd is named as a leading lawyer and a prominent figure for contentious and non-contentious trusts work in the Citywealth Leaders List 2011.
Chambers Global, 2011, says that Shepherd is prized for his prowess in commercial, corporate, banking and employment disputes. Interviewees assert that he can ‘come down like a ton of bricks on the opposition’ when needs be, and also praise his commercial nous.
He is characterised by clients as ‘stepping in with advocacy work as necessary and making a good job of it — he’s right up to the mark’, according to Chambers Europe, 2010.
He is ‘incredibly hard working and has a great grasp of complex areas of the law’, says Chambers UK, 2010.
The Legal 500 UK states that Shepherd is ‘pragmatic and constructive’ and that ‘he looks for solutions’.
‘There isn’t much he could improve on — he always delivers an excellent product,’ says Chambers Europe.
