Robbin' the hood

The Law Society may be backing the Lord Chancellor's proposals to get rid of barristers' archaic uniforms, but some solicitors aren't so sure.

One young female litigation partner recently told Tulkinghorn that she is particularly fond of the diminutive black mourning hood junior barristers wear cast over the left shoulder of their gowns, as they have done since the death of Charles II in 1685. “Sometime juniors go off on completely the wrong tack in court. I like to grab the hood and yank it to let them know when to shut up,” she explained.
