The dangers of working overseas are all too apparent to Tulkinghorn, who rarely strays far from the cobbled streets of the City.
So it was no surprise when one of our spies learned of a cautionary tale from Russia involving a Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer lawyer, a policeman, and a misguided act of goodwill.
In a classic sting, the Freshfields partner was walking through Moscow when he saw a Russian man drop his wallet on the pavement. Calling out to him, the partner ran after the man to return it. That, he thought, was that - until he saw the same man minutes later, this time in a state of rage and accompanied by a policeman who accused him of stealing cash from the wallet.
The partner had no choice but to open his own to prove his innocence, whereupon the duo trousered the contents and made off.
Proof that no good deed goes unpunished, especially in Russia.
