A great article, and a firm that is largely ahead of its peers.This is a firm that knew what was coming , with new entrants and the like, and was proactive as opposed to reactive. In response to the post at 6.32 above, whilst I can't claim to know the firms retention rates, they are bound to be superb. I not so long ago worked as a locum for a year for a firm in greater London, that used direct capture rather than referrals.No one is likely to have heard of this firm, other than defendant Insurers! They had an excellent work flow system in progress, with admin staff undertaking various parts of the process, allowing fee earners to negotiate settlement, pre or post proceedings. They paid excellent basics,did not micro- manage, and allowed fee earners , and administrators to get on with the job. Consequently they grew from two staff to nearly 200, in eight years, and paid monthly bonuses on billings, to all staff. The corollary was no one left in eight years, and despite the absence of partnership prospects( it is a sole practitioner practice). The level of pay across all classes of fee earners was, I would venture to say unbeatable. Think a Member of the Institute of Legal Executives, or 3 year qualified solicitor, earning £100,000 plus as a matter of routine, for handling solely fast track cases! Bonuses were paid monthly, to keep them incentivised and focused. I suspect Winn has an identical model. Meanwhile there are probably another dozen firms with similar models , and financials across the country,whom are quietly(very quietly) keeping under the radar! Good luck yo you Mr Winn and colleagues, I suspect you could teach a thing or two, to these pompous commercial, mid-tier/larger firms, who think they know how to run a business because they are "commercial lawyers"
