Plea for understanding as conference shines a light on 'third legal community'

Comment

A legal commission for in-house? Michael Butcher and I have briefly discussed his ideas for a commission to investigate and report on the right regulation for in-house lawyers in the past. My view is that the regime in force for Solicitors operates properly - at least in broad terms. I suspect, though I do not know, that this is more of an issue for barristers whose regulation is focussed on advocacy and immediately related work To have a look at this issue would be sensible, but we (solicitors, at least) need to be very wary that it does not end up with a "third legal community" regime that differentiates us from any other solicitor - an outcome one suspects would be welcomed in Europe. We also need to be wary that we do not make it more difficult to distinguish ourselves from the paralegals who often challenge for jobs in this type of role.
