Even without the illegal deductions the scheme was the mother's mother of all gravy trains for the solicitors. What the DTI were thinking about when they "negotiated" the fees payable to thesolicitors is anyones guess. Did they work out the fee for doing one case without any consideration of the savings to be made by a firm dealing with thousands of claims? It is a bit like paying a car manufacturer the prototype car price for thousands of mass produced cars. Who do we blame? The solicitors for picking up the fortune placed in front of them or the DTI for placing it there?
