Just to add on to my previous post - the people I referenced in paralegal positions are not trying to do what Anonymous 18-Sep-2012 2:41pm is referring to but are just gaining legal experience whilst earning money. Also I remembered hearing about scholarships provided by the Inns of Court; perhaps check with yours to see how and when you can apply?
