Unfortunately it is a much needed tool due to how the UK's access to law system currently works. If we perhaps adopted a system such as in Sweden whereby during a Masters course (UK LPC equivalent stage) you are required to work within a law firm for 10 weeks to assist with your thesis (and law firms continually accept students all year) - it makes for a much more fluid motion of employment and matching employee/firm suitability. Reducing these desperate measures to try to be seen and heard. Training contracts act as such a barrier to access, not to mention that applying 2 years in advance is ridiculous. Many young trainees get stuck with contracts they no longer wish to fulfil as their plans change - unknowingly frustrating 100 odd other extremely willing candidates. How can the firms be getting the 'best' workers if many successful trainees’ want out before they're even in? Till Sverige…
